“When Ukrainian textiles companies on the Canadian prairies began expanding their product offerings to include tableware and other household objects, they decorated the designs with motifs adapted from their traditional textiles. Removed from their original context, these patterns were a significant departure from those typically applied to Ukrainian ceramics or even Pysanka (Ukrainian Easter eggs); the strict grid-based motifs feel like a new graphic style, one more closely related to the pixel based construction of computer graphics.”
