Craft Council of Newfoundland/Labrador Ceramics

During the Annual Beach Firing and Pottery sale hosted by the Craft Council of Newfoundland Labrador, local ceramists and potters bring their unfinished clay objects to be fired at Middle Cove Beach (a popular beach just outside of St. John’s). Using a special type of pit firing, seaweed, driftwood and other materials found on the beach are used for fuel. The pieces are wrapped and loaded into a pit in the morning and continue to burn into the afternoon. This technique results in beautiful and unpredictable colours and textures – truly one-of-a kind works of art.

The one-day event has become such a success that apparently the beach was lined with admirers this past year just waiting for the objects to cool down enough to be purchased straight off the beach.
