“This proposal for the Toronto Winter Stations approaches the theme of catalytic action from multiple directions. First, it seeks to visually dissolve the isolated, contrasting elements of the lifeguard towers through repetitive aggregation of complex, multi-layered geometries. Empty, welded wire frame gabion baskets are stacked and arrayed around the periphery of the tower; with a vibrant red PVC coating, this new field condition obscures and assimilates the existing structure within.

Second, it seeks to change the state of its own perception. The typical deployment of gabion baskets carries associations of weight, mass, and earthy volume. Here, the opposite becomes true. A large volume becomes weightless, transparent, ephemeral. Perceived solids are nothing more than framed voids. Within this matrix, visitors seem to float, ascending and inhabiting the towers platform. Outwards, a view is framed across Toronto’s winter shores.”
