“The Province” Road Map for Bicyclists

This fantastic “Pocket Road Map of Victoria and Surroundings Compiled for the use of Bicyclists” was recently acquired by the University of Victoria and digitized so we can all have a good look.

Notice how the map’s designer toyed slightly with convention, rotating everything eastward to create a stronger, more efficient composition. Among the cyclist friendly features are clearly marked hotels and concentric circles radiating at one mile intervals from downtown (“the new Post Office”), for estimating distances at a glance. Best of all, arrows indicate which directions are downhill.
