Vancouver Expo Souvenir “Bucky Dome”

It is debatable if Expo 86 had quite the impact that Expo 67 had, especially in any design sense, and this mutt may be symbolic of this thought. Ugly for sure and completely void of any good design attributes, this souvenir is still successful in marking its time and place and does highlight one of the great contributions of the event.

The architectural wonder of the Bucky Dome first appeared at the Montreal Expo and was repeated on site at the Vancouver event and as testament, both are still standing and have become important features in their cityscapes.

Let’s hope, that the next time Canada has the attention of the world we use it to put our best designers forward, unlocking them to create beautiful and potent mementos.
